Comparing procedures for performing tetrazolium test on carrot seeds Horticultura Brasileira
Lima,Cristina B; Boaventura,Ana C; Villela,Tamiris T.
ABSTRACT The tetrazolium (TZ) test is one of the main methods to estimate vitality or viability and seed vigor. The aim of this study was to improve the methodology and reduce the execution time of tetrazolium test on carrot seeds, considering two existing references on this subject. Eight lots of ‘Brasilia’ carrot seeds were used. The hydration, during the pre-conditioning of the seeds, was done in two ways: directly in water during 18 hours and in rolls of filter paper during 2 hours. Seed color was analyzed through combinations between cutting types, concentration, period and temperature used during contact with the TZ solution. Three types of longitudinal cutting were used, before immersion in the tetrazolium solution: a) lateral and as distant as...

Conductivity test in seeds of different passion flower species PAB
Mira,Sara; Veiga-Barbosa,Luciana; González-Benito,María Elena; Pérez-García,Félix.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of the conductivity test as a means of predicting seed viability in seven Passiflora species: P. alata, P. cincinnata, P. edulis f. edulis, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. morifolia, P. mucronata, and P. nitida. Conductivity of non-desiccated (control), desiccated, and non-desiccated cryopreserved seeds was determined and related to their germination percentage. The obtained results suggest that the electrical conductivity test has potential as a germination predictor for P. edulis f. flavicarpa seed lots, but not for the other tested species.

Do the structures of macaw palm fruit protect seeds in a fire-prone environment? Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Rosa,Bruno Luan; Souza,Anna Elisa de; Rios,Camilla Oliveira; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão.
ABSTRACT Fire is an abiotic disturbance that regulates vegetation structure and biodiversity. Some plant species have adapted to fire prone environments by evolving protective structures. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm) is widely distributed throughout tropical America, and is found in environments continuously influenced by anthropogenic fire. We aimed to determine whether the fruit characteristics of A. aculeata enable seeds to resist the effects of fire and also the consequent effects of fire on fruit biometric traits and embryo viability. After a fire event in a region of pasture-forest transition, we marked 30 individuals of A. aculeata. The trees were separated by UPGMA analysis into 5 groups according to fire exposure, ranging from trees with no...

Alves,Edna Ursulino; Santos-Moura,Sueli da Silva; Moura,Mácio Farias de; Silva,Rosemere dos Santos; Galindo,Evio Alves.
ABSTRACT: Crataeva tapia L. is a fruit native to the Brazilian savanna, the Caatinga, and is used in the production of soft drinks and other beverages. Given the importance of this species and the lack of knowledge about its seeds, this research aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of C. tapia L. seeds subjected to different environments and drying periods. Seeds were dried for the following time periods: 0 (no drying), 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours, in the laboratory environment (25°C and 90% RH) and in a greenhouse (30°C and 80% RH). After the drying period, seeds from each of the treatments were used for determining the water content, germination, and vigor (using tests for emergence, first count of germination and emergence, rate of germination...

Factors influencing seed germination in Cerrado grasses Acta Botanica
Kolb,Rosana Marta; Pilon,Natashi Aparecida Lima; Durigan,Giselda.
Few studies address the ecology of herbs of Cerrado grasslands, which are ecosystems where the long dry season, high temperatures, insolation, fire and invasive grasses greatly influencing germination and the establishment of plants. We assessed germination of 13 species of Poaceae from Cerrado grasslands under nursery conditions or in germination chambers, the latter with i) recently collected seeds and seeds after six months storage, ii) under constant and alternating temperatures, and iii) in the presence and absence of light. Germinability, mean germination time (MGT) and required light were quantified to elucidate factors involved in successful germination. Germinability was low for most grasses, probably because of low seed viability. For most...

Germination of seeds from herbaceous plants artificially stored in cerrado soil BJB
SASSAKI,R. M.; RONDON,J. N.; ZAIDAN,L. B. P.; FELIPPE,G. M..
The germination of three cerrado herbaceous species: Bidens gardneri, Vernonia herbacea (Asteraceae) and Psychotria barbiflora (Rubiaceae) was studied using seeds stored in cerrado soil and in refrigerator at 4°C. The field experiment was carried out at a preserved area of cerrado, the Reserva Biológica e Estação Experimental de Mogi-Guaçu, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The soil was collected in the same cerrado where the experiment was carried out. The achenes of Bidens gardneri are light sensitive, but this sensitivity disappeared when the achenes were stored in soil. With 3 months storage in cerrado soil no differences in germination in light or darkness were detected. The number of intact achenes retrieved from storage in soil decreased with increasing...

Pre-dispersal seed loss of Ramorinoa girolae (Fabaceae) in Ischigualasto Provincial Park (San Juan, Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Papú,Sofía; Lagos Silnik,Susana; Campos,Claudia M.
Ramorinoa girolae Speg. is a “vulnerable” tree endemic to Argentina. During the pre-dispersal stage, the seeds are predated by Anypsipyla univitella. The objectives of this study were to describe some reproductive parameters (size and number of fruits and seeds) of R. girolae, to quantify pre-dispersal seed loss by abortion and predation, and to test the effect on pre-dispersal seed predation of fruit production (per tree, of co-specific neighbors, and the sum of both), size of fruits, number of seeds per fruit, and number of predators per fruit. As seeds can be partially consumed by the predator, the viability of partially damaged seeds was assessed as well. At Ischigualasto Park, we sampled 17 adult trees from 3 stands spaced 4 km...

Quality monitoring of soybean seed tests using Statistical Process Control AGRIAMBI
Alcântara,Aline S.; Prado,Jéssica P. do; Corrêa,Rafael de G.; Silva,Rouverson P. da; Voltarelli,Murilo A.; Vieira,Roberval D..
ABSTRACT The success of soybean cultivation depends on several factors, one which is the use of high-quality seeds, which can guarantee growth of the desired plant population. The objective of this study was to monitor possible failures during the seed production process, and to determine the association between germination and tetrazolium tests through tools of Statistical Process Control (CEP). The experimental design was based on premises of the CEP, using percentage of germination, seed viability, mechanical damage, bed bug, and moisture as indicators of quality. It is possible to detect flaws in the soybean production process through control charts, as well as through germination and tetrazolium tests; results indicated that germination failures are...

Variations in sugars and cyclitols during development and maturation of seeds of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam., Leguminosae) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Borges,Igor F.; Barbedo,Claudio J.; Richter,Andreas A.; Figueiredo-Ribeiro,Rita de Cássia L..
Seeds of Caesalpinia echinata are tolerant to desiccation, keeping their viability up to 0.08 g H2O g-1 DM. When stored under laboratory conditions they lose their viability within one month, while under low temperatures germination ability is maintained during two years of storage. Here, we report on the variations of soluble carbohydrates, cyclitols and cyclitol galactosides in seeds of C. echinata during development and maturation, aiming for a better understanding of the involvement of these compounds in the maturation process and seed quality. Individual flowers were tagged on the day of anthesis and pods were collected directly from the branches from 32 to 59 d after anthesis (DAA). Seeds were also collected after shedding. The physiological maturity...
